Our Assessment: This Argentine Model 1909 Mauser was manufactured by Deutsche Waffen-Und Munitionsfabriken in Berlin as part of Argentina’s early 20th century modernization of its military rifle inventory. Built on the Mauser 98 action, the Modelo 1909 is widely regarded as one of the finest commercial-contract Mauser rifles produced prior to the First World War. The receiver ring displays the Argentine national crest above the “MAUSER MODELO ARGENTINO 1909” designation, while the left side of the receiver bears the DWM manufacturer marking. With its 29 inch barrel, tangent rear sight graduated to 2000 meters, and full-length military stock with auxiliary bayonet lug and cleaning rod, the rifle reflects the high-quality craftsmanship typical of pre-war Mauser contract rifles. This rifle is chambered in 7.65x53mm Mauser, the cartridge adopted by Argentina in the late 19th century and known for its flat trajectory and effective service performance. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and little to no visible erosion, earning a rating of 9.75 out of 10. The rifle retains approximately 94 percent of its original metal finish with light thinning, scattered scratches, and small areas of patina visible on the receiver and hardware. The two-piece wood stock shows moderate handling wear including dents and scratches along with several small chips, placing it in Very Good overall condition.
This rifle’s action functions correctly and cycles smoothly. All serialized components remain matching and the receiver markings including the Argentine crest remain clear and well defined. The rifle is accompanied by a matching-pattern Argentine bayonet marked with its own serial number and crest along with its scabbard and leather frog, which show light wear and patina but remain in Very Good condition. Overall, this Argentine Model 1909 stands as a well-preserved example of a classic DWM contract Mauser, combining matching numbers, a strong bore, and original military accessories. -R.E.
