Our Assessment: The Argentine Model 1909 was one of the finest military Mauser rifles of its era, manufactured by DWM in Berlin for Argentina and built around the exceptionally strong Gewehr 98-pattern action. Chambered for the 7.65x53mm Argentine cartridge, the Model 1909 was renowned for its excellent machining, smooth action, and high standard of finish. A limited number were selected for sniper use and equipped with specialized over-the-bore scope mounts and European optics. This authentic sniper example retains its proper long 29″ barrel, matching serialized components, original military configuration, and Nedinsco/Carl Zeiss 4×30.8 optic mounted in the distinctive Argentine sniper system. This rifle remains in Very Good condition as refinished, retaining approximately 60% of its metal finish. The exterior shows moderate thinning, wear, patina, and scattered light rust freckling, while the action exhibits moderate operational wear. The screw heads range from lightly to moderately tooled and the markings remain clear. The refinished stock shows light scratches, pressure dents, several small chips, and a repaired area along the bottom but no active cracks, rating in Very Good condition. The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling and shows only faint erosion with light stubborn fouling, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Particularly noteworthy is the rifle’s matching serialized condition, including the cleaning rod. Mechanically, the action functions correctly.
For collectors of military Mausers and early sniper systems, an authentic Argentine Model 1909 sniper is a scarce and highly desirable variation. The purpose-built sniper configuration, matching components, Nedinsco/Carl Zeiss optic, distinctive Argentine over-the-bore mount, long 29″ barrel, and original 7.65x53mm chambering give this rifle substantial historical and collector significance. Although the rifle has been refinished and the stock shows an old repair, those condition considerations are outweighed by the rarity and completeness of the authentic sniper configuration. This is an important and seldom-encountered Argentine military precision rifle with strong appeal to advanced Mauser and sniper-rifle collectors. -R.E.
