Our Assessment:  Imagine if a Soviet light machine gun and a U.S. regulatory compliance officer walked into a bar. That’s essentially the story of the RPD machine gun’s journey to becoming a semi-auto rifle in America. Originally a favorite among Cold War soldiers for its reliability, the RPD was a heavy hitter with its drum magazine and a steady stream of 7.62×39mm rounds. Fast forward to modern times, and this iconic piece of Soviet hardware found its way into the civilian market, courtesy of DSA Inc., through a mix-and-match of surplus parts from Russian / Egyptian parts kits. Of course, to meet U.S. laws, these RPDs had to trade in their full-auto action for a more laid-back semi-auto vibe, complete with a shiny new receiver. So, what we have now is a classic Cold War relic that’s been given a fresh American twist—proof that even Soviet designs can adapt to new regulations with a bit of ingenuity!

The RPD (Ruchnoy Pulemyot Degtyaryova) is a Soviet-designed light machine gun introduced in the late 1940s (1948). Known for its reliability and robustness, the RPD was primarily used by Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces throughout the Cold War. The original RPD operates as a fully automatic weapon, chambered in 7.62×39mm, and is distinguished by its distinctive pan magazine and gas-operated system.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the RPD’s design and parts found their way into civilian markets through various importers, including DSA Inc., an American firearms distributor. These imported RPD machine guns were often assembled from surplus kits sourced primarily from Egyptian military surplus parts. The kits typically included original RPD components, such as barrels, bolts, and gas systems.

Due to strict regulations governing fully automatic firearms in the United States, these surplus RPD kits were converted into semi-automatic rifles to comply with federal law. This conversion process involved using the original parts from the surplus kits and pairing them with newly manufactured receivers designed to accommodate semi-automatic functionality.

The result is a semi-automatic rifle that retains much of the historical character and operational essence of the original RPD machine gun. These rifles offer enthusiasts and collectors a unique piece of Cold War-era firearm history, blending the rugged reliability of Soviet design with modern legal compliance. These guns provide a tangible link to the past while accommodating the legal framework of the present.  Get yours today and and enjoy freedom like never before and rain some hate downrange.
