Our Assessment: The Danish M1889/24 Krag–Jørgensen Infantry Carbine, chambered in 8x58mmR, is a modification of Denmark’s original M1889 rifle, adapted specifically to meet the needs of infantry with a shorter, more maneuverable carbine design. The M1889 series, designed by Norwegian firearms innovators Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jørgensen, was Denmark’s first rifle to use smokeless powder cartridges, representing a significant leap in firepower and range. The M1889/24 was introduced to enhance the practicality of the Krag–Jørgensen rifle for close-quarters and fast-moving combat scenarios typical of infantry engagements. Like the original M1889, the 1889/24 Infantry Carbine employs the Krag–Jørgensen side-loading magazine system. This magazine design is distinctive because it allows for a quieter loading process and the ability to top off rounds individually without removing the magazine. This feature was beneficial in combat situations, as soldiers could keep their magazines loaded and avoid the need to reload entirely. The Krag system is generally lauded for its smooth operation and reliability, although it offers a lower rate of fire and capacity compared to some of the more advanced Mauser systems of the time. The carbine configuration reduced the rifle’s length, creating a handier and lighter version for Danish infantry. This shorter length allowed for improved handling and quicker aiming, especially useful for troops in confined spaces or rugged terrain. Although shortening the barrel resulted in a slight loss of velocity and effective range, the 8x58mmR cartridge still provided sufficient stopping power and accuracy for the typical engagement ranges of infantry combat.
Overall, the M1889/24 Infantry Carbine is a unique representation of Denmark’s military adaptation of the Krag–Jørgensen platform. The rifle embodies the evolution of European infantry arms during a period of rapid technological advancement. While it was eventually phased out in favor of more modern systems, the M1889/24 carbine remains a valued piece for its craftsmanship, reliability, and historical importance within Danish military history. -R.E.
