Our Assessment: The m/40 was a licensed copy of the Finnish Lahti L-35 pistol, designed by Aimo Lahti. It was produced on the request of the Swedish Army, who in 1939 had ordered quantities of the Walther P38, but when World War II broke out in September of that year, Walther redirected Sweden’s batch of P38s to the German war effort. Sweden then tried unsuccessfully to purchase Lahti L-35s from Finland, who, in the process of bolstering their own army, could not spare any. Finland instead granted Sweden a license to produce their own L-35s, which was handled by the firm of Husqvarna Vapenfabriks after the company that was initially selected, Svenska Automatvapen, shut down.

Production of the m/40 began in 1940 and it was immediately adopted by the Swedish Army. Denmark also ordered the M/1940. Altogether 13 500 pistols were sold to Denmark. 10 000 of these were intended for the Danish police normally with prefix D. These pistols are often found with black holsters. The pistol was called m/40S in Denmark.

The Danish General Lund who was Commanding Quartermaster officer for the Danish Brigade 1944 has confirmed that altogether some 13 000 pistols came to Denmark. 10 000 pistols m/40 were ordered for the police force. All marked with “D” like Denmark in front of the serial number. They range from D 5001 – D 16000 all with inspection mark Crown over “HV” which means “Haerens Vapenarsenal” (Army Armory). The responsible inspection officer at the factory was a Danish called Captain-Lieutenant J. Gundelach. Pistol m/40 was designated Pistol m/40S in Denmark.

This Pistol is in Excellent Condition and comes with 3 magazines, cleaning rod, takedown tool and leather holster. From the serial number, this pistol seems to be one of the first 30 sent to Denmark. This is a fantastic firearm and will be a must have for any WW2 collection. If you’re looking for a high quality, excellent condition WW2 pistol, this is a fantastic option. Good luck on your bid! -M.C.
