Our Assessment: The Danish Geværfabrikin Kjøbenhavn 1889/24 Artillery Carbine, chambered in 8x58mmR, is a notable example of early 20th-century military firearms. Initially produced as the M1889 rifle, it was the first to use a small-caliber, smokeless powder cartridge in Denmark’s military. Designed by the Danish arsenal Geværfabrikin Kjøbenhavn, the M1889 was later modified into several configurations, including the 1889/24 Artillery Carbine, to meet the needs of various branches within the Danish military. This model specifically catered to artillery crews, providing a more compact, easily maneuverable rifle than the full-length infantry version. The 1889/24 Artillery Carbine retained the primary features of the original M1889, including the robust Krag-Jørgensen-style action, which allowed for smooth and reliable cycling. The Krag system features a unique side-loading magazine, which is quieter and allows soldiers to top off rounds without disrupting the firing process fully. The carbine format reduced the overall length and weight of the rifle, making it more suitable for soldiers who needed to move quickly and handle heavy equipment. Chambered in 8x58mmR, a rimmed cartridge known for its decent range and stopping power, the 1889/24 Artillery Carbine was adequate for defensive engagements and skirmishing. While the 8x58mmR cartridge was not as ballistically advanced as some later cartridges, it provided effective firepower for the time. The shorter barrel of the artillery carbine configuration made it handier in confined spaces, but with a minor reduction in muzzle velocity due to the shorter barrel length.

The Danish Geværfabrikin Kjøbenhavn 1889/24 Artillery Carbine holds historical significance as a well-crafted and versatile weapon. As an early example of modular weapon systems adapted for specific roles within the military, it demonstrates the forward-thinking design approach of the Danish arsenal. Collectors and historians often regard this carbine as a unique piece, representing a transitional era in European military firearms development. -R.E.
