Our Assessment: The Dan Wesson Model 40 in .357 SuperMag is a purpose-built revolver designed for long-range accuracy and silhouette shooting. Introduced in late 1983, it was developed alongside Elgin Gates to fire the .357 SuperMag cartridge, an extended version of the .357 Magnum that delivers higher velocities with less pressure than other magnum calibers. This cartridge was designed to improve performance in handgun metallic silhouette shooting, offering flatter trajectories and superior energy retention at long distances.
This particular Model 40 features an 8″ vent rib barrel, a signature of Dan Wesson revolvers, known for their interchangeable barrel system, which allows shooters to swap barrels for different lengths and configurations. The revolver is blued, with a solid wood grip for improved handling and a classic aesthetic. Produced between 1983 and the early 2000s, the Model 40 remains highly sought after by collectors and silhouette shooters, prized for its superb accuracy, modularity, and powerful cartridge design.
Due to the extreme power of the .357 SuperMag, prolonged use could cause flame cutting on the top strap and forcing cone erosion. To mitigate this, Dan Wesson shipped the Model 40 with an extra barrel, ensuring long-term durability. This practical solution allowed shooters to replace worn barrels instead of discarding the entire revolver, making it a well-engineered firearm built for sustained use in high-performance applications.
