Our Assessment: The Remington Model 40-X is one of the company’s premier precision bolt-action rifles, developed for target, benchrest, varmint, and serious accuracy work rather than ordinary sporting use. Built around Remington’s strong cylindrical bolt action, the 40-X line earned a reputation for excellent barrels, rigid bedding potential, crisp triggers, and the kind of repeatable accuracy demanded by competitive shooters and dedicated varmint hunters. This example is especially interesting as a custom-built rifle fitted with a 24 inch Dan Dowling heavy barrel marked “DOWLING / 22-250,” pairing the respected Remington 40-X action with a classic high-velocity .22 caliber varmint chambering. The .22-250 became famous for its flat trajectory, explosive varmint performance, and excellent long-range potential, making it a natural match for a heavy-barreled precision rifle. The mounted Lyman Super Targetspot 15x scope further enhances the rifle’s vintage target and varmint-rifle character, giving the package the look of a serious mid-century custom accuracy build.
This example rates in about Fine condition as a custom-built rifle, retaining approximately 97 percent of its metal finish with only very light operational wear, thinning on some leading edges, and a few scratches on the bottom metal. The Dan Dowling heavy barrel and Remington 40-X receiver remain well marked, and the stainless barrel gives the rifle a purposeful custom appearance. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9.75 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The smooth walnut stock rates in Very Good condition as professionally repaired, showing scattered scratches, scuffs, nicks, compressions, filled accessory rail work, and reinforced repairs around the wrist and grip area where a previous break was addressed. The aftermarket adjustable trigger has a very light, clean break, and the action functions correctly. The included Lyman Super Targetspot 15x scope and canvas sling complete the rifle as an appealing vintage precision package with strong collector and shooter interest for fans of custom Remington target and varmint rifles.
