Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is one of America’s most respected bolt-action sporting rifles, valued for its strong action, reliable feeding, and excellent handling. This custom 1964 example is chambered in .30-06 Springfield and features a 22″ barrel, internal magazine with hinged floorplate, and a finely shaped aftermarket walnut stock with checkering, contrasting forend tip, capped pistol grip, shadowline cheekpiece, and recoil pad. A Redfield 5 Star 3-9×40 scope in Buehler mounts completes a traditional big-game hunting configuration.
Introduced in 1936, the Model 70 earned the enduring nickname “The Rifleman’s Rifle” and became a benchmark for American sporting-rifle design. The .30-06 Springfield remained one of its most popular chamberings, offering proven versatility for a broad range of North American game. Rifles produced during 1964 occupy a notable transitional period in Model 70 history, when Winchester changed from the classic pre-64 controlled-round-feed design to revised production methods and action features.
This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish, with light handling and operational wear and minor thinning near the muzzle. The custom walnut stock remains in Very Good to Excellent condition with only a few light scratches and compression dents, while the bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9.5/10. The action and safety function correctly, and the mounted Redfield scope adds practical hunting utility. Overall, this is a Very Good custom Model 70 with an excellent bore and strong sporting appeal. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids! MF
