Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion, just a little stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 97% of its current metal finish. The new finish is generally strong throughout. There is some minor erosion under the finish on the receiver. Some areas show a plum hue. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition as customized (see Mechanics).
Mechanics: The set trigger will not set properly. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. The extractor has been modified, possibly for use with the Model 52 barrel. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This Winchester 1885 High Wall receiver that has been customized with a beautiful set of stocks and has been fit with a Model 52 barrel cut-back and re-threaded for use in this receiver. The extractor has been altered, possibly for use with the Model 52 barrel. The rifle has a set-trigger, though we were not able to get it to set properly. It does function just fine without being set. The rifle has provision for mounting optics, though none are included. This is a neat project rifle that will be fun to get ready for the range. Please see our photos and good luck!
