Our Assessment: The Uberti Model 1873 is a modern Italian reproduction of Winchester’s famous Model 1873 toggle-link lever action, with Cimarron importing versions built by Uberti to its specifications for the American market. Cimarron’s traditional carbine configuration uses a 19″ round barrel, barrel-band front sight, full-length tubular magazine, and carbine-style furniture. Uberti/Cimarron has also offered the Model 1873 in .44 Special, though that chambering has been considerably less common than .357 Magnum, .44-40 WCF, or .45 Colt. These rifles became especially popular in Cowboy Action Shooting, where the Model 1873’s straight-line carrier system and exposed toggle-link action lend themselves particularly well to action tuning and short-stroke modifications. Cimarron’s current 1873 line continues to use the 19″ round-barreled carbine configuration.
This example has been substantially modified for faster operation. It is fitted with a Cowboys and Indians short-stroke system, a replacement lever, and an aluminum carrier, while the original lever lock has been removed. Cowboys and Indian Store specifically produced short-stroke kits for Uberti 1866 and 1873 rifles; its installation instructions show replacement toggle links and require careful carrier-to-bolt timing adjustment after installation. The rifle retains about 90% of its original blue and case-colored finish with scattered light scratches and handling marks. The walnut furniture remains in Good to Very Good condition with scratches, compression dents, and some finish loss at the toe but no cracks. The bright bore retains sharp rifling with no observed erosion and only light fouling and rates 9/10. The action functions correctly. With its short-stroke action work and lightweight carrier, this is a purpose-modified Model 1873 well suited to the Cowboy Action competition environment for which such modifications were developed.
