Our Assessment: The Remington Rolling Block No.1 style rifle remains one of the most enduring single shot designs in firearms history, originally developed in the late 1860s and widely used across military and sporting markets worldwide. This modern custom example by Beyond 1000 follows the classic sporting configuration, retaining the simplicity and strength of the rolling block action while incorporating contemporary materials and craftsmanship. The rolling block system is known for its robust lockup and straightforward operation, making it a favored design for precision shooting. Chambered in .45-70 Government, a cartridge introduced in 1873 and long associated with both military and sporting use, the rifle offers substantial power and a long history of proven performance. This example retains approximately 98 percent of its refinish, with bright case coloring on the receiver and only faint handling marks visible throughout. The bore is bright with strong rifling and rates 9.75 out of 10, indicating excellent internal condition. The walnut stock set remains in Very Good Plus condition, showing light handling wear but no structural issues, and features a Schnabel forend and straight grip configuration. The rifle is equipped with a tang mounted adjustable sight, enhancing precision shooting capability, while the octagon barrel adds both visual appeal and weight for stability. Markings are clear and well defined, and the action functions correctly.
The combination of a long 32 inch octagon barrel, tang sight, and .45-70 chambering places this rifle firmly in the tradition of classic single shot sporting rifles, designed for deliberate and accurate shooting. The rolling block action continues to be valued for its durability and simplicity, and this custom build reflects that legacy with modern execution. This example stands as a well crafted and well preserved rifle, blending historical design with contemporary construction in a highly functional and visually appealing platform. -R.E.
