Our Assessment: The Heckler and Koch HK91 is the semi-automatic commercial variant of the G3 rifle, a platform that became one of the most widely issued battle rifles of the Cold War. Built around the roller-delayed blowback system, the HK91 utilizes a precisely engineered locking mechanism that delays bolt movement without the need for a gas system, contributing to its reputation for durability and consistent function with full-power cartridges. Imported into the United States prior to the 1989 restrictions, rifles such as this 1980 example are considered pre-ban and represent a period when original German-made HK rifles were available in their factory configuration. Chambered in .308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm NATO, a cartridge introduced in the 1950s and known for its power and versatility, the HK91 delivers performance consistent with its military origins. This example presents in very good overall condition, retaining approximately 98 percent of its original black enamel finish with light scratches and handling marks, along with some rub wear on the receiver from a previously mounted scope base. The chrome-lined bore is bright with sharp rifling and only minor fouling, supporting strong performance potential. The rifle has been configured with a custom polymer furniture set, including a PSG-1 style pistol grip and a modified fixed stock with cheek riser and extended buttplate, offering an enhanced shooting interface. The furniture shows minimal wear and remains in excellent condition. The rifle retains its classic HK sighting system with a hooded front post and rotating diopter rear drum, providing a precise and repeatable sight picture.
This HK91 reflects both its original military-derived design and later customization aimed at improving ergonomics and adaptability. The inclusion of a substantial magazine package, along with accessories such as a brass catcher, brass deflectors, and a B-Square scope base, adds to its overall completeness and utility. With its strong condition, pre-ban status, and enhanced configuration, this rifle stands as a notable example of a platform that continues to be valued for its engineering, performance, and enduring presence in the world of semi-automatic rifles. -R.E.
