Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a base integral to the barrel. The rear sight is a folding U notch that is dovetailed into a boss in the barrel. There is a set of Talley bases mounted on the receiver. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a custom one piece checkered walnut, capped semi pistol grip, straight comb, and rubber recoil pad. The LOP is 13 3/4″ from trigger to recoil pad. There is light handling wear. There are light scratches and compression dents throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: This appears to be a barrel rebored from an original Winchester barrel. The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is light fouling. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its current metal finish. There is light handling and operational wear. There are some light scratches. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Excellent condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The custom pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is a traditional sporting rifle built on one of America’s most respected controlled-round-feed actions and chambered in .338-06. This 1949 example features a 24″ barrel, internal box magazine, factory-style iron sights, Talley scope bases, and a custom checkered walnut stock with recoil pad. Its classic pre-64 action, versatile medium-bore chambering, and understated custom configuration make it a strong fit for North American big-game hunting.

The .338-06 is based on the .30-06 Springfield case necked up to accept .338″ bullets, offering substantial performance without requiring a magnum-length action. This rifle appears to retain an original Winchester barrel that has been rebored to .338-06, preserving much of the rifle’s original external character while adapting it to a heavier hunting cartridge. Pre-64 Model 70 actions are especially well suited to this type of custom work because of their robust construction, controlled-round-feed system, and long-standing reputation for reliability in the field.

This rifle retains about 95% of its current refinished metal finish, with only light handling and operational wear and a few minor scratches. The custom walnut stock remains in Excellent condition with light handling marks and no chips or cracks, while the bright rebored barrel has sharp rifling and rates 9.5/10 with only light fouling. The action functions correctly. Overall, this is an Excellent custom pre-64 Model 70 with a strong bore, quality stock work, and a practical .338-06 chambering that gives it considerable big-game sporting appeal.
