Bore Condition: The bores are bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion or fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: These revolvers retain about 96% of their metal finish. The only finish wear is that some of the gold plating has thinned from storage in the case on both guns. It appears to be from storage and old oil residue that has solidified. Neither revolver shows a turn line through the finish. The balance shows very minimal wear both handling and storage. There are no carbon rings on the face of the cylinder and only minor smudge marks from storage can be seen. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, both of these revolvers rate in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The actions function correctly. We did not fire these revolvers. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The revolver set comes in a gold felt-lined wood presentation case with its cardboard protective sleeve. The lid of the case is etched with a St. Augustine 400th Anniversary seal and the Colt logo.
Our Assessment: The Colt Frontier Scout is a scaled down rimfire version of the famous Colt Single Action Army, designed to replicate the look and handling of the classic Peacemaker while chambered for the economical and widely available .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Introduced in the late 1950s, the Frontier Scout quickly became popular with shooters and collectors alike, and Colt produced numerous commemorative editions during the 1960s that celebrated historical events, cities, and important anniversaries. These commemoratives often featured distinctive finishes, special barrel markings, and presentation cases that made them attractive display pieces.
This consecutive pair of revolvers was produced in 1965 to commemorate the Quadricentennial of the founding of St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously inhabited European established city in the United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral and explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine played an important role in the early colonial history of North America. The 400th anniversary celebration in 1965 was marked by numerous historical events and commemorative items, including these special Colt Frontier Scout revolvers bearing barrel markings honoring the St. Augustine Quadricentennial.
These revolvers are a desirable consecutive numbered pair, serial numbers 46AQ and 47AQ, which adds an extra level of collector appeal. Both revolvers retain about 96 percent of their original finish with some thinning of the gold plating from long term storage in the presentation case. The bores are bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion. One revolver has grips that appear slightly loose and oversized while the other remains tight and in excellent condition. The pair is accompanied by its original gold felt lined wood presentation case marked with the St. Augustine 400th Anniversary seal and Colt logo along with the original cardboard protective sleeve.
