Our Assessment: The Colt 1st Model Dragoon stands as one of the most historically significant early American military handguns, and this 2nd Generation example from Colt’s Manufacturing Company faithfully revives that legacy for modern collectors. Originally developed in the late 1840s as an improvement over the Walker Colt, the Dragoon series addressed earlier design issues while retaining the massive power and presence that made these revolvers iconic on the frontier. The 1st Model Dragoon, with its distinctive square-back trigger guard and early features, represents the beginning of this important evolution in Colt percussion revolvers.
Colt’s 2nd Generation black powder revolvers, produced primarily between 1971 and 1982, were manufactured with a high level of polish and historical accuracy, often using a combination of U.S. and Italian-produced components finished and assembled by Colt. These revolvers have become collectible in their own right, offering enthusiasts a chance to own a near-authentic representation of Colt’s 19th-century designs without the cost or fragility of an original antique.
This example remains in excellent overall condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original blue, case colored, and brass finishes. The vivid case hardening on the frame and loading lever contrasts beautifully with the deep blue barrel and cylinder, while the brass trigger guard adds to its classic appearance. The cylinder’s engraved Texas Ranger and Indian battle scene is crisp and well-defined, an important feature that enhances both historical character and visual appeal. Mechanically, the revolver is in strong working order, with tight lockup and minimal play, reflecting careful use and preservation. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, indicating excellent internal condition. The one-piece wood grip remains in fine condition with only minimal handling wear, maintaining the revolver’s overall presentation.
The inclusion of the original matching Colt box and paperwork further elevates this piece, as complete examples of 2nd Generation black powder Colts are increasingly sought after by collectors. While not an original 19th-century production revolver, this Dragoon offers the same commanding presence and historical styling, making it an addition for those interested in early American firearms or Colt’s percussion-era heritage.
