Markings: The right side of the slide is marked “EL POTRO RAMPANTE” along with elaborate gold and silver scroll engraving. The left side of the slide features elaborate gold and silver scroll engraving  and a Gold Horse holding a broken spear in its teeth.  The right side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. / EPI00443”. The magazine floorplate is marked with a rampant colt, “M”, “COLT” and “SUPER / .38 AUTO” “S”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a red fiber optic pipe dovetailed to the slide and the rear sight is a Novak square notch sight with a set screw dovetailed into the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth faux-pearl panels with a gold medallion depicting a rearing horse with a broken spear between his teeth. There is no notable wear or damage. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition. Additionally an extra pair of blue and black VZ checkered grips are included. They are in excellent condition  as well.

Type of Finish: Blue Slide, Frame and Controls. Gold and Silver engraving on the slide and frame.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates a 10 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are some handling marks but no notable defects. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide has almost no play to the frame. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a blue plastic Colt box with serial-matching label, an assortment of factory paperwork including manual, a cable lock, an extra pair of blue and black VZ checkered grips and  two 9-round magazines.

Our Assessment: From SK Guns Website: “This is a Colt 1911 chambered in .38 super. special edition called the El Potro Rampante. This Colt started life as a competition model and has since had a tremendous amount of custom work done to it. It is the first limited “El Potro Rampante” which features a Royal Blue Polished steel frame that has been engraved, has gold inlays and custom grips.” This El Potro Rampante is in Excellent condition with its original box and is ready to add to a collection or to show off at your next barbecue.
