Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army is one of the most historically important revolvers ever produced, introduced in 1873 and forever associated with the U.S. Cavalry, frontier lawmen, ranchers, outlaws, and the mythology of the American West. After original production ended before World War II, Colt revived the design in 1956 with the 2nd Generation series, bringing the classic Peacemaker back for a new era of collectors and shooters. These early 2nd Generation revolvers are especially desirable, as they represent Colt’s return to traditional single action production with high fit-and-finish standards and close visual continuity with earlier prewar guns. Chambered in .45 Colt, the cartridge originally paired with the SAA in 1873, this revolver preserves the classic caliber and 5 1/2 inch barrel configuration that many consider one of the most balanced and iconic forms of the model.

This example retains about 98 percent of its current finish as refinished, showing light handling and operational wear, muzzle thinning, a light cylinder turn line, and scattered scratches. The markings remain clear, and the screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked. The two-piece stag grips are in Excellent condition with light handling wear and no chips or cracks, though they are not original to the revolver. The bore is somewhat bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and fouling down the length, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with a crisp trigger, a separate cylinder bushing, and light perceptible play in lockup on all six chambers. Overall, this is an attractive early 2nd Generation Colt Single Action Army in the classic .45 Colt chambering, with strong collector appeal despite the refinish and replacement stag grips.
