Our Assessment: Colt’s Single Action Army revolver is one of the most recognizable handguns ever produced, first introduced in 1873 and quickly becoming synonymous with the American frontier. After production of the original model ended during World War II, Colt reintroduced the revolver in 1956 due to strong public demand from shooters, collectors, and the growing influence of Western films and television. These revolvers, known today as the Second Generation Single Action Army models, were produced from 1956 through 1974 and maintained much of the traditional craftsmanship and appearance of the original nineteenth century Peacemaker revolvers.
During the 1960s Colt produced a series of commemorative Single Action Army revolvers honoring notable historical figures and events. The General Meade Pennsylvania Campaign Model commemorates Major General George Gordon Meade, the Union commander who led the Army of the Potomac to victory over Confederate forces at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. These commemorative revolvers featured distinctive presentation elements including gold barrel markings and gold plated components while retaining the classic form and handling characteristics of the traditional Colt Single Action Army chambered in .45 Colt.
This example, serial number 004MC, remains in Fine condition and retains the majority of its original finish. The blued surfaces show only minimal handling and storage wear, while the gold plated hammer and accents show light wear at the edges consistent with careful handling. The faux ivory grips with Colt medallions complement the commemorative presentation and show only light marks from storage and use. With its attractive commemorative markings and early serial number within the series, this Second Generation Colt Single Action Army stands as a handsome tribute to one of the most famous revolver designs in American history.
