Our Assessment: The Colt Python stands among the most celebrated double action revolvers ever produced, introduced in 1955 as Colt’s flagship .357 Magnum and renowned for its hand fitted action and exceptional finish quality. By 1977, the Python was firmly established as a premium revolver, favored by law enforcement, target shooters, and enthusiasts who appreciated its smooth trigger pull and distinctive appearance. Features such as the full underlug barrel, ventilated rib, and finely tuned lockwork set the Python apart from its contemporaries, while its reputation for accuracy and refined handling made it a benchmark for American revolver design during the latter half of the twentieth century.
Chambered in .357 Magnum, the powerful cartridge introduced in 1935 and long regarded for its versatility and performance, this example retains approximately 95 percent of its original blued finish with light edge wear, a visible cylinder turn line, and minor handling marks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling present, rating 9 out of 10. The checkered walnut grips with Colt medallions show handling wear but remain intact, and the revolver exhibits solid lockup with proper function in both single and double action. With its 6 inch ventilated rib barrel, classic Colt craftsmanship, and very good overall condition, this 1977 Python represents a highly desirable example of one of Colt’s most iconic revolvers.
