Our Assessment: The Colt Python has long been regarded as one of America’s premier double-action revolvers, originally introduced in 1955 as Colt’s top-tier .357 Magnum. Its distinctive ventilated rib, full-length ejector-rod shroud, adjustable sights, refined lockwork, and premium finish established a reputation that made the Python one of Colt’s most recognizable handguns. After discontinuation of the original series, Colt returned the Python to production in 2020 with a strengthened action and modern manufacturing while retaining the classic profile. The traditional blued Python subsequently returned to the modern lineup, recreating one of the most iconic configurations of the original “Snake Gun” era with a deep blue finish and checkered walnut stocks. This 6″ example combines that classic presentation with the strength and updated engineering of Colt’s current-production Python.
This Python remains in Excellent condition, retaining approximately 99% of its original blue finish with only minor storage and handling evidence. The installed Black Pearl Kirinite stocks remain equally clean with virtually no wear and give the revolver a distinctive custom appearance, while the included original checkered walnut Colt stocks allow it to be returned to its factory configuration. The bright 9/10 bore retains sharp rifling with no erosion despite some copper fouling, and mechanically the revolver remains excellent with proper double- and single-action operation and tight cylinder lockup showing no play. Its 6″ vent-rib, full-underlug barrel, excellent finish, strong bore, and complete factory case and stock set make this an especially attractive modern interpretation of Colt’s legendary Python.
