Our Assessment: The Colt Python has long occupied a premium position among American double-action revolvers, having originally been introduced in 1955 with extensive hand fitting, a distinctive ventilated rib and full-length ejector-rod shroud, and an exceptionally refined action. Colt revived the Python in 2020 with a redesigned and strengthened stainless-steel action while retaining the appearance and handling characteristics that made the original famous. The 3″ Python returned to production in 2022, reviving one of the rarest and most sought-after barrel lengths from the original Python era. Its compact proportions, six-shot .357 Magnum cylinder, adjustable sights, and traditional walnut stocks combine classic Python styling with the durability and mechanical improvements of Colt’s modern production.
This 2023 Python remains in Excellent condition, with its semi-bright stainless surfaces showing little to no handling wear and only a handful of minor storage marks. The checkered walnut stocks remain equally strong with sharp checkering and no chips or cracks, while the bright 9/10 bore retains sharp rifling with no erosion and only minor fouling. Mechanically, the revolver remains excellent with tight cylinder lockup and proper double- and single-action function. The installed Wilson Combat adjustable rear Battlesight provides a robust aftermarket sighting upgrade, while the included factory rear sight allows the original sighting configuration to be restored. The serial-matching Colt case, paperwork, additional Wilson Combat front sight, chamber flag disc, and child lock make for a particularly complete modern Python package.
