Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT NEW FRONTIER S.A.A. .45”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871″ / “JULY 2, 72 JAN. 19, 75”, alongside the Rampant Colt logo. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT, U.S.A.”. The left side of the grip frame and backstrap are marked with the serial number. The face of the cylinder is marked with the partial serial number. The interior of the grip panels are marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 7 1/2″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated, ramped blade fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch adjustable for windage and elevation in a base pinned to the flat topstrap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth walnut with gold Rampant Colt medallions. There are handling scratches and compression marks along the panels. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original. Limited Run of Full Blue New Frontiers
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion or fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are handling scratches. There is some finish loss on the left side of the front sight. There are polish marks along the frame. The frame shows a slight plum color under bright light. There is minor oxidation on the frame butt. The screw heads are sharp, though do not sit flush with the frame. Overall, this revolver rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: We have provided a photo of a Colt archive letter that confirms this as a “Full Blue” New Frontier. The letter does not come with the listing, but we have added the photo as a reference. There are no accessories that are included with this listing.
Our Assessment: The Colt New Frontier Single Action Army was introduced during Colt’s 2nd Generation SAA production as a target-sighted variation of the classic Peacemaker pattern. It retained the traditional single-action lockwork, side loading gate, and .45 Colt chambering, but added adjustable sights and a flat-top style sighting arrangement for shooters who wanted the look and handling of the Single Action Army with more practical sight regulation. This 1963-manufactured example is C&R eligible and represents an early centerfire New Frontier configuration with the desirable 7 1/2″ barrel. Of particular note, this revolver was part of a limited run of full blue New Frontiers.
This Colt New Frontier SAA is a .45 Colt 6-shot single-action revolver with a 7 1/2″ barrel, serrated ramp front sight, adjustable square-notch rear sight, and two-piece smooth walnut grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions. The grips rate in about Fine condition, showing handling scratches and compression marks with no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion or fouling, and rates 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, though the revolver has not been test fired. Overall, this is a Fine condition 1963 Colt New Frontier Single Action Army in .45 Colt with classic 2nd Generation Colt appeal, a strong bore, desirable long barrel, and target-style adjustable sights.
