Our Assessment: The Colt New Frontier Single Action Army represents a refined evolution of the classic Colt Single Action Army, combining traditional styling with enhanced shootability. Introduced in the early 1960s, the New Frontier variant is distinguished by its flat-top frame and fully adjustable rear sight, offering improved accuracy over the fixed-sight SAA while maintaining the same legendary action and profile. Chambered in .45 Colt and featuring a 7 1/2 inch barrel, this example reflects the classic “cavalry length” configuration favored by both shooters and collectors.
Produced in 1974, this revolver comes from Colt’s later 2nd Generation era, a time when the company continued to emphasize quality craftsmanship while adapting its historic designs for modern use. The adjustable sights make the New Frontier particularly appealing to those who want a more practical shooting revolver without sacrificing the iconic look and feel of the original design. The inclusion of the original matching factory box and paperwork further enhances its collector value, as complete examples from this period are increasingly sought after.
This revolver remains in excellent overall condition, retaining nearly all of its original finish with strong case colors and a pristine bore. Only minimal handling wear is present, and the revolver exhibits crisp mechanics and clean markings throughout. Combining classic Colt heritage with enhanced functionality and excellent preservation, this New Frontier is a desirable example for both collectors and shooters alike.
