Markings: The right side of the slide is marked ”COLT GOVERNMENT MODEL”. The left side of the slide is marked “COLT MK IV / -SERIES 80-” and with a rampant colt. The right side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. / SG07986E”. The barrel is marked “COLT SUPER 38 AUTO“. The left of the trigger guard is marked with the “VP” proof and “5”, the right is marked with what might be a partial “D”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a white dotted blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a rectangular notch sight with two white dots, dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the slide is matte for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a checkered black wood grips with Colt Rampant medallions in their centers. There are a few light handling marks.There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is strong with faintly worn peaks. The grip rates in about Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is minor stubborn fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10
Overall Condition: The balance of the finish shows little to no handling or operation wear. There are a few minor scratches in the polished surfaces. The screw heads are undamaged. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide to frame fit is snug. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, it may need a thorough cleaning to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with its serial matching blue hard case, trigger lock, owner’s manual, and a single 8-round magazine.
Our Assessment: The Government Model served the United States military well through two World Wars and still sees some limited use in more modern configurations to this day. It has been no less popular on the civilian market, with dozens of companies making hundreds of variations on the original. This pistol is a MK IV Series ’80 Government Model chambered for .38 Super with a bright stainless finish. It has a beavertail safety and a curved checkered mainspring housing.
