Our Assessment: The Colt Gunsite Pistol represents a collaboration between Colt and the famed Gunsite Academy, blending traditional Series 70 Government Model architecture with modern defensive refinements. Built on the proven 5 inch Government platform, this configuration preserves the classic lines and balance that made the Model 1911 an American icon while incorporating practical combat sighting and grip enhancements favored in serious training environments.
Chambered in .45 ACP, a cartridge introduced in 1905 and formally adopted by the U.S. military in 1911, this pistol delivers the authoritative performance and manageable recoil impulse that has defined the 1911 pattern for over a century. The bright bore and sharp rifling complement the strong mechanical condition and high percentage of retained finish, presenting as a well cared for example of Colt’s late 20th century custom shop era output.
This example, complete with its original factory box and matching label, reflects Colt’s continued refinement of the Government Model in a period when practical shooting doctrine heavily influenced factory offerings. It stands as a solid representation of Colt’s Gunsite collaboration and will hold appeal for collectors of modern Colt variants as well as enthusiasts of serious 1911 lineage.
