Our Assessment: This Colt Gold Cup National Match was manufactured in 1968 and qualifies as a Curio and Relic pistol. Produced by Colt, the Gold Cup was introduced in the 1950s as a factory-enhanced target version of the Government Model. By the late 1960s, the Gold Cup had firmly established itself as one of the premier production bullseye pistols in America, featuring refinements such as an adjustable rear sight and a lighter target trigger setup.
Chambered in .45 Auto with a 5 inch barrel, this pistol maintains the traditional Government Model profile while incorporating National Match enhancements intended to improve accuracy and shootability. The .45 ACP cartridge remains closely associated with competitive and service use in the 1911 platform. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5 out of 10, indicating great internal condition. The action functions correctly.
This firearm retains approximately 85 percent of its metal finish, showing moderate wear consistent with use while maintaining a strong overall appearance. The grips rate in Very Good condition with faint handling marks. Overall, this firearm is in Very Good Plus condition and stands as a desirable example of a late-1960s Colt Gold Cup National Match from the golden era of American target pistol production.
