Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army was introduced in 1873 and became one of the most recognizable American revolvers, serving military, law-enforcement, ranching, and civilian users throughout the late 19th century. Colt applied the Frontier Six Shooter designation to Single Action Army revolvers chambered in .44-40 Winchester, allowing owners to carry a revolver and Winchester lever-action rifle using the same cartridge. The traditional etched barrel panel became one of the most distinctive markings associated with this chambering. Third Generation Single Action Army production began in 1976 and continued Colt’s classic solid-frame design with modern manufacturing methods while retaining the traditional fixed sights, side loading gate, manual ejector, and four-click hammer action. This 2009 example combines the historic .44-40 chambering with the long 7 1/2″ barrel and black eagle-pattern stocks for a configuration closely associated with Colt’s frontier-era revolvers.
This Frontier Six Shooter retains approximately 97% of its original finish, with only light handling wear, minor muzzle thinning, and a small oxidation spot on the backstrap. The case coloring remains vibrant, the black checkered stocks are in Fine condition, and the action functions correctly. Its bright bore retains sharp rifling, though a few minor erosion spots are present. The matching abbreviated numbers on the cylinder and loading-gate assembly, traditional 7 1/2″ barrel, and desirable .44-40 chambering make this an appealing modern Colt for the Single Action Army collector or enthusiast.
