Our Assessment: The Colt Diamondback .22 LR is a classic double-action revolver that stands out for its sleek design, precision craftsmanship, and exceptional performance. Introduced in 1966, the Diamondback was designed as a scaled-down version of the iconic Colt Python, often referred to as the “Baby Python” by enthusiasts. It was part of Colt’s premium line of revolvers, intended for law enforcement, self-defense, and target shooting, combining both form and function in a highly desirable package. Chambered in .38 Special, the Colt Diamondback was particularly popular due to the versatility of the .38 Special cartridge. Known for its manageable recoil and accuracy, the .38 Special made the Diamondback an ideal choice for both novice shooters and experienced professionals. The revolver was also available in .22 LR, catering to those who preferred a less expensive and lower-recoil option for target practice or small game hunting. Regardless of the caliber, the Diamondback was celebrated for its precision and ease of use. The Colt Diamondback featured a ventilated ribbed barrel, which was not only a hallmark of its stylish design but also served a practical purpose by reducing barrel heat during extended shooting sessions Despite being discontinued in 1988, the Colt Diamondback remains highly sought after in the collector’s market. Its association with the Colt Python and its reputation for quality craftsmanship ensure that it holds a special place in the hearts of firearms enthusiasts. The Diamondback is often regarded as one of Colt’s finest revolvers, embodying the company’s legacy of producing high-quality, reliable, and beautiful firearms.

Overall, the Colt Diamondback .22 LR is a legendary revolver that combines exceptional craftsmanship, a versatile caliber, and a striking design. Its popularity among law enforcement, target shooters, and collectors is a testament to its enduring quality and performance. The Diamondback continues to be revered as one of Colt’s most iconic revolvers, a symbol of the golden age of American firearm manufacturing. -M.C.
