Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT COWBOY 45 COLT”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is marked with a Rampant Colt logo. The bottom of the frame is marked with the serial number. The front face of the cylinder is marked “747” and the rear “C45”.
Barrel Length: 4 3/4″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered plastic with a Rampant Colt at the top in an oval. There are scattered handling scratches and compressions. The checkering remains sharp with minor peak loss. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips rate in Very Good-Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 90% of its original finish. There is minor finish loss at the muzzle and leading edges. There is thinning along the grip straps. There are scratches on the barrel, cylinder, and the grip straps. There are minor compression dings. There is scattered corrosion staining and oxidation pitting throughout. The action shows operational wear. There is a turn line on the cylinder. The case-color is partially vibrant. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tooled but all are serviceable. The markings are clear.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Colt Cowboy was introduced in 1999 as a more affordable alternative to the traditional Single Action Army during the rapid growth of Cowboy Action Shooting. Although closely patterned after the Peacemaker in appearance, balance, and handling, the Cowboy incorporated several important mechanical differences, most notably an investment-cast steel frame and a transfer-bar firing system manufactured under license from Ruger. Unlike the traditional SAA’s hammer-mounted firing pin, the Cowboy uses a frame-mounted firing pin and transfer bar, making it a distinctly modern interpretation of Colt’s classic single action. Initially offered primarily with a 5 1/2″ barrel, the 4 3/4″ version was reintroduced in 2002 shortly before Cowboy production ended in 2003. This 2002 example therefore represents the short-lived final-period 4 3/4″ configuration of one of Colt’s more unusual modern single-action revolvers.
This Cowboy retains approximately 90% of its original finish, with honest use represented by muzzle and edge wear, grip-strap thinning, scattered scratches and compression marks, corrosion staining, oxidation pitting, operational wear, and a cylinder turn line. The checkered black composition stocks remain in Very Good-Fine condition with sharp definition and no chips or cracks, while the bright 9/10 bore retains sharp rifling with no erosion and only light fouling. Mechanically, the revolver remains strong with a smooth action and crisp trigger. The matching “747” partial serial marking on the cylinder is a desirable originality detail, while the serial-matching Colt case and paperwork further enhance the completeness of this relatively short-lived Colt variation.
