Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army 3rd Generation continues the legacy of one of the most iconic revolver designs ever produced, originally introduced in 1873 and closely associated with the American frontier. By 1992, Colt’s 3rd Generation production maintained the traditional lines, handling, and mechanical layout that defined the original Peacemaker, while incorporating modern manufacturing processes. The 5 1/2″ barrel configuration represents a classic and versatile length, offering a balanced profile that has long been favored for general use.
Chambered in .45 Colt, this revolver is paired with a cartridge that has remained in continuous use since the 19th century. Originally developed for military service, the .45 Colt became widely known for its effective performance and adaptability across a broad range of applications. Its continued pairing with the Single Action Army platform reflects a longstanding association between cartridge and revolver design, maintaining both historical continuity and practical relevance.
This example presents in good condition, retaining approximately 90% of its original blued and case-colored finish with visible thinning at the muzzle and other high points along with scattered handling marks. The walnut grips show wear including light chipping near the front base, though they remain serviceable, and additional Colt grips are included. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, and the action functions smoothly with a crisp trigger. Accompanied by its factory box, paperwork, and spare grips, this revolver represents a solid example of a 3rd Generation Single Action Army with typical signs of use.
