Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army is one of the most iconic American revolvers, first introduced in 1873 and forever associated with the Old West, military service, lawmen, ranchers, and generations of sporting shooters. Colt resumed Single Action Army production after World War II with the 2nd Generation series, which has become highly collectible in its own right for its traditional construction, classic handling, and closer connection to earlier Colt manufacturing than later production runs. This 1961-manufactured example is a 125th Anniversary commemorative SAA, making it especially appealing to Colt collectors, commemorative revolver enthusiasts, and those who appreciate long-barreled .45 Colt Single Action Army revolvers.

This Colt 2nd Generation Single Action Army is a .45 Colt single-action revolver with a 7 1/2″ barrel, side-loading gate, fixed quarter-round blade front sight, and square-groove rear sight milled into the topstrap. The revolver retains about 95% of its original finish, with the blue showing little handling wear, thinning on the gold-gilded areas to a silver tone, operational wear on the action, and a thin turn line forming on the cylinder. The two-piece smooth walnut grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions rate in Excellent condition, showing handling scratches and compression dents but no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, fouling in the grooves, no erosion, and rates 9.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and the trigger is crisp, though the revolver has not been test fired. Included are the Colt wooden display box with molded red liner, Colt Anniversary keychain, and paper card. Overall, this is a Excellent condition 1961 Colt 2nd Generation Single Action Army 125th Anniversary revolver with desirable commemorative features, classic .45 Colt chambering, strong bore condition, and excellent collector presentation.
