Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered black hard rubber with rampant colt in oval at their tops. The grips have light handling wear. There are some nicks and scratches, mostly on the bottom face of the panels. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Very Good condition as not original to the gun.
Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is a little stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 50% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is wear along the ejector housing. The grip areas show moderate handling wear. Most worn areas have gone to a light patina. The frame’s case color has mostly muted or gone to a light patina with a little good color in well protected areas. There is some minor surface erosion, mostly on the frame and cylinder. There is scattered minor surface oxidation. The cylinder has notable turn-wear. There are some light nicks and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The cylinder pin head is tool marked. The markings range from clear to worn, but legible. Overall, this revolver is in Good-Very Good condition (see Mechanics).
Mechanics: The hammer does not have a safety notch. When at half-cock, the bolt is not properly disengaged, the hammer must be pulled slightly past half-cock to rotate the cylinder. The hammer has excessive over-travel at full-cock. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. The cylinder has a removable bushing. The cylinder locks up with minor play on each chamber. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: Colt’s Single Action Army is, perhaps more than any other, an iconic American pistol. It was the U.S. issue sidearm for the last two decades of the 19th century, used by pioneers, outlaws and lawmen across the expanding nation, and captivated audiences on the silver screen and television (and still does, today). Produced for nearly a century and a half, they are still being made, today! This example is a 1st Generation Frontier Six Shooter made in 1907. Apart from markings and chambering, the ‘Frontier Six Shooter’ is the same as any other Single Action Army, but they are specifically chambered for the .44-40 WCF cartridge, making an ideal companion revolver for a Winchester lever action rifle chambered for the same cartridge. Any 1st Generation SAA would make a great addition to a Colt collection, and this early 20th Century example should be no exception. Please see our photos and good luck!
