Our Assessment: This 1968 Colt Commander is a desirable C&R-eligible Lightweight Commander chambered in 9mm Luger, a particularly appealing configuration for collectors of early commercial Colt 1911 variants. The Commander was Colt’s shortened, lightweight postwar adaptation of the 1911 platform, offering a 4.25″ barrel and alloy frame for easier carry while retaining the familiar single-action operation, grip safety, thumb safety, and removable magazine system. Originally offered in chamberings including 9mm, .45 ACP, and .38 Super, the Commander became one of Colt’s most important carry-size 1911 patterns, and this example’s 9mm chambering, “COLT COMMANDER” slide marking, Rampant Colt logo, matte-topped slide, and original Coltwood grips give it excellent vintage commercial appeal.
This pistol remains in Excellent overall condition, retaining about 99% of its original blued/anodized finish with only minor handling scuffs and scratches on the slide and frame, along with operational wear on the barrel, hood, and action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The Coltwood grips with molded Rampant Colt medallions are also Excellent, with sharp checkering, little to no peak loss, and no cracks or chips. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the included 9-round magazine rates Excellent with minor operational wear. The Colt “woodgrain” cardboard box, though not serial matching, and included paperwork add nicely to the package. This is a clean, early Lightweight Commander in 9mm that should appeal to Colt collectors, 1911 enthusiasts, and shooters who appreciate classic carry-size Colt automatics.
