Our Assessment:  The Colt Government Model Mk IV/Series 70 is one of the classic commercial evolutions of the M1911 platform, retaining the traditional single-action operation, full-size 5” Government Model format, and pre-Series 80 lockwork that many Colt collectors prefer. Introduced in the 1970s, the Series 70 line is well regarded for its clean mechanical layout, classic Colt markings, blued finish, and connection to Colt’s postwar commercial 1911 production. While most Government Models are encountered in .45 ACP, Colt also produced pistols in other chamberings, and this example is especially interesting in 9mm Steyr. The 9mm Steyr cartridge, historically associated with Austrian service pistols such as the Steyr-Hahn, is far less commonly encountered in American commercial 1911-pattern pistols, making this Colt an unusual and highly collectible variation. Manufactured in 1980, this pistol combines desirable Series 70 features with uncommon factory-style 9mm Steyr markings, a serial-matching Colt “woodgrain” box, paperwork, and a 9-round magazine.

This Colt Mk IV/Series 70 Government Model is a 5” single-action semi-automatic pistol chambered in 9mm Steyr with a blued finish, fixed sights, checkered walnut grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions, one 9-round magazine, paperwork, and a serial-matching Colt “woodgrain” cardboard box. The pistol retains about 98% of its original finish with minor handling scratches and scuffs throughout, sharp screws, and clear markings. The grips rate in Fine condition with minor handling wear and sharp, defined checkering. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly. This pistol should appeal strongly to Colt collectors, Series 70 enthusiasts, 1911 collectors, and buyers seeking a scarce 9mm Steyr Government Model with its matching box and paperwork.
