Our Assessment: The Colt Government Model Mk IV/Series 70 is one of the classic commercial evolutions of the full-size 1911 pistol, carrying forward John Browning’s proven single-action design in Colt’s traditional 5” Government Model format. The Series 70 line is especially appreciated by collectors and shooters for its pre-Series 80 lockwork, classic Colt rollmarks, blued finish, and straightforward mechanical layout. Chambered in .45 ACP, the Government Model remained a benchmark American semi-automatic pistol through the late 20th century, valued for its slim grip profile, crisp trigger, manual thumb safety, grip safety, and long service history in military, defensive, sporting, and target roles. Manufactured in 1980, this example represents late Series 70 production and retains desirable features such as Colt-marked barrel/chamber markings, walnut grips with gold Rampant Colt medallions, original blue finish, and a useful magazine and holster package.
This Colt Mk IV/Series 70 Government Model is a .45 ACP single-action semi-automatic pistol with a 5” barrel, blued finish, fixed sights with a hand-painted white front blade, checkered walnut Colt medallion grips, seven magazines, and a black Blade-Tech right-handed holster. The pistol retains about 98% of its finish with handling scratches, compression dings, scuffs, a takedown scratch, thinning at the muzzle and bottom of the slide, and operational wear on the barrel and action. The grips rate Fine, the bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, and the action functions correctly. This pistol should appeal to Colt collectors, Series 70 enthusiasts, 1911 shooters, and buyers looking for a well-preserved 1980 Colt Government Model with range-ready accessories.
