Our Assessment: This 1954 Colt Commercial Government Model is a desirable C&R-eligible postwar example of Colt’s classic civilian 1911, chambered in the traditional .45 ACP cartridge. The Government Model was Colt’s commercial counterpart to the U.S. military M1911/M1911A1, one of the most important and influential semi-automatic pistol designs of the 20th century. Postwar commercial Colts from the 1950s are especially attractive to collectors because they reflect the return of civilian production after World War II while retaining the classic forged-steel, single-action Government Model configuration. This example has the full-size 5″ barrel, blued finish, matte-topped slide, Coltwood grips with molded Rampant Colts, and classic “GOVERNMENT MODEL / COLT / AUTOMATIC CALIBER .45” slide markings.
This pistol rates in about Fine overall condition, retaining approximately 96% of its original blue finish with handling scratches, scuffing on the matte surfaces, finish thinning at the muzzle and leading edges, a takedown scratch, light corrosion freckling, and operational wear in the action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, though minor erosion pitting is present throughout, rating 7/10 in this writer’s opinion. The Coltwood grips remain Excellent with sharp checkering and only light handling scratches, while the included 7-round magazine rates Very Good with operational wear and some corrosion staining. Mechanically, the action functions correctly. With its 1954 production date, C&R status, original finish, classic commercial Colt markings, and strong postwar 1911 character, this Government Model should appeal to Colt collectors, 1911 enthusiasts, and bidders seeking a vintage commercial .45 ACP pistol from the early postwar era.
