Our Assessment: The Colt 1860 Army 2nd Generation Stainless is a modern variation of one of the most historically significant percussion revolvers of the Civil War era, produced during Colt’s late 20th century revival of its classic black powder line. The original 1860 Army was widely issued and became known for its improved balance, streamlined barrel profile, and .44 caliber power, making it a dominant military sidearm of its time. This 1982 production example preserves those defining characteristics while incorporating stainless steel construction, offering enhanced durability and resistance to corrosion compared to traditional finishes.
Chambered in .44 caliber black powder, this revolver follows the traditional six-shot percussion configuration with an 8″ barrel, providing a long sight radius and steady handling. The simple sighting arrangement, consisting of a brass front blade and hammer-notch rear, remains faithful to the original Colt design. The open-top frame and roll-engraved cylinder maintain the classic visual and mechanical elements of the 1860 Army, while the stainless finish adds a practical modern touch without altering the revolver’s overall form.
This example presents in excellent condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original finish with only light handling wear and minor surface scratches. The stainless surfaces remain clean and well preserved, and the walnut grip shows minimal wear with no structural concerns. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, and the action functions correctly with good timing and tight lockup. Accompanied by its factory box and manual, this revolver represents a clean and well-maintained example of a Colt 2nd Generation 1860 Army with modernized finish and strong overall presentation.
