Our Assessment: This Underwood M1 Carbine produced in mid-1943 represents the height of World War II’s streamlined production efforts, combining precision manufacturing with collaborative industry partnerships. Underwood Elliott-Fisher, known for their expertise in producing typewriters and other office machinery, was one of the key contractors tasked with manufacturing M1 Carbines during the war. This particular example features a Rock-Ola barrel, indicative of the cooperative effort among manufacturers, as Rock-Ola, famous for making jukeboxes, also produced barrels and complete carbines. This blending of components from various contractors highlights the wartime practice of interchanging parts to meet production quotas and ensure logistical efficiency.

The Springfield Armory stock, stamped with “FAT 68,” is a post-war addition signifying refurbishment at the Fabbrica d’Armi di Terni (FAT) in Italy during 1968. This mark reflects the carbine’s service beyond World War II, likely issued to Italian forces as part of U.S. military aid during the Cold War. These carbines were often rebuilt using a mix of original and replacement parts, refinished, and meticulously maintained, ensuring their functionality for decades after the war. The Springfield Armory stock’s robust construction and the FAT stamp connect this carbine to the intricate post-war history of American small arms used by allied nations.

Reimported and refinished by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), this M1 Carbine comes with the added provenance of a known and trusted source for surplus military firearms. The CMP’s refinishing process includes careful cleaning and preservation, ensuring the firearm’s functionality while maintaining its historical integrity. This Underwood M1 Carbine is a testament to the longevity and versatility of the design, serving as both a functional piece of history and a collector’s item that reflects decades of global military use and stewardship.
