Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose cap, stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been sanded and refinished. There appears to have been something that happened to one side of the stock that raised the grain features. The forward section of handguard has been replaced at some point. The wood shows discoloration, compressions, scratches and nicks throughout. The wood has also dried out in sections and shows open grain features. There are no cracks. There are several small chips from the edges of the wood. The butt plate is missing its finish, shows rub wear and retains a strong door spring. Overall the stock is in about Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright and the rifling is well defined. There is minor visible pitting/erosion mainly in the grooves throughout the bore. According to our gauges the muzzle reads at a 1+, the throat reads at about a 1+. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8.25/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The barrel and gas cylinder show the majority of the thinning finish. The bolt shows some rub wear on the friction surfaces. The metal has turned green from age. The markings are clear, the screw heads are sharp, and the action is smooth. Overall this rifle is in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes a green canvas sling, en bloc clip, yellow chamber flag, manual, and CMP Paperwork.
Our Assessment: This M1 Garand was originally manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1944 and later served as part of Denmark’s postwar military aid inventory. After WWII, many Garands were supplied to allied nations, including Denmark, where they saw continued service during the Cold War. This example was subsequently re-barreled with a Danish VAR barrel sometime after August 1961, a common and well-regarded upgrade performed during Danish arsenal refurbishment.
The rifle is accompanied by Civilian Marksmanship Program paperwork confirming its Danish return status. Danish-issued Garands are notable for their high-quality replacement barrels produced by Vaabenarsenalet (VAR), which are widely respected for accuracy and durability. This rifle represents a desirable blend of original 1944 Winchester production and documented Cold War-era Danish service history.
