Barrel Length: 22”, 25” with the classic flash hider. This is a National Match marked barrel.  

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between protective wings mounted to the flash hider. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between protective wings. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock set includes an M1A pattern walnut stock with two sling swivels and hinged metal butt plate with storage compartment. The rifle was originally shipped with a black fiberglass stock. The handguard is a brown synthetic handguard. The length of pull is 13.25″. The stock shows some small compressions and surface level lines. The butt plate functions correctly. The leading edge of the grip shows a chip. The wood shows no cracks. The handguard shows a rough spot on the left hand side and some cracks on the top. Overall the stock set is in Very Good condition.          

Magazine Quantity & Condition: This rifle includes 1 x 25 round and 22x 20 round magazines all in about Good condition. 23 total magazines.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. The feed ramps show copper fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains 93% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show minor rub wear as does the right side of the barrel. The rifle shows minor marks from handling and use. The markings are clear and the screw heads sharp. Overall this rifle is in Very Good condition.   

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes the magazines(23), a sling, a Certificate of Authenticity from Clint Smith and a gear vest.    

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A Loaded was manufactured in 1998 and represents a higher-grade configuration of Springfield Armory’s civilian M14-pattern rifle. Chambered in .308 Winchester/7.62 NATO, the Loaded model was intended to offer enhanced accuracy and match-oriented features while retaining the classic appearance and handling of the M14 platform. This example is fitted with a handsome walnut stock, giving it a traditional appearance that complements the rifle’s military-inspired design.

Adding substantial historical interest, this rifle was formerly owned by Clint Smith a highly respected firearms instructor and the founder of Thunder Ranch. The rifle is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity documenting its provenance, making the connection to Smith an important part of the package. It also includes 22 twenty-round magazines and one 25-round magazine, providing an unusually extensive magazine package.
