Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “SMITH & WESSON” and with the four line Marcas Registradas. The left side of the frame is marked “A156734 / MODEL 39-2”. The top of the exposed portion of the barrel is marked “9MM CTG”. The right side of the frame is marked with an S&W monogram logo.

Sights / Optics: The front sight has a serrated ramp and is fixed to the slide painted orange. The rear sight is a target sight with a square notch, adjustable for windage and elevation, and is dovetailed into the slide.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut, each with a S&W medallion at the top. There are a very few light handling marks throughout. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are spots of light furniture finish loss throughout the panels. The checkering is sharp. A few of the checkering peaks have chipped off. There are no cracks. The grips rate an Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is light fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates at 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its finish. The balance of the finish shows handling and storage wear. There are scratches and thinning throughout. There is thinning from operation wear. There is orange paint on the barrel bushing. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 is a classic first-generation American 9mm DA/SA semi-automatic pistol, developed from the original Model 39 line and introduced as an updated variant in 1971. The Model 39 family is historically significant as one of the first successful American double-action 9mm service pistols, and the 39-2 update incorporated reliability improvements including a revised extractor, barrel bushing, and feed ramp. This 1972–1973 C&R-eligible example is configured with a 4” barrel, 9mm Luger chambering, magazine safety disconnect, adjustable rear target sight, orange-painted serrated ramp front sight, blued finish, checkered walnut S&W medallion grips, and five 8-round magazines.
This Model 39-2 is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 97% of its original blued finish with handling and storage wear, scratches, thinning, operational wear, and orange paint present on the barrel bushing. The checkered walnut grips rate in Very Good condition, showing light handling marks, scratches, compression marks, spots of finish loss, and a few chipped checkering peaks, but no cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and light fouling in the grooves, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the screw heads are sharp, the pins are unmarred, and the markings are clear. This pistol comes with five 8-round magazines, a holster, and certificate of authenticity from Clint Smith, making it a desirable C&R Smith & Wesson 39-2 package for S&W collectors, early American semi-auto enthusiasts, and Clint Smith collectors.
