Our Assessment: The Carronade Cannons were used to fire through portholes of a ship and sometimes in forts in close quarters. The Carronade was considered the logical sea cannon. It was easily secured for controlled recoil. The loop also made rapid dock-to-ship transfer of the weapon safer and quicker. The stout Carronade is physically shorter than many of the cannons of its time. This design reflects tight shipboard quarters and allowed fast relocating in the space provided. Trunnions are below center.
I feel as though this tube began as part of a project that just never quite got finished or even started for that matter. If you’ve been looking for a tube to do some reenacting or living history events, this is a heck of a way to start down that trail. With a bit of ingenuity and or a easily ordered kit, from folks like Dixie Gun Works or Hern Iron Works, this monolithic yet manageable masterpiece could be ready to fire. A simple carriage or even a mounted yoke, could transform this tube into a signal cannon for celebrations, a piece of living history or even a swivel style, punt gun for a small water craft. Either way “IT’S A CANNON!” and they are nothing but fun. So bid high and bid firm. I highly encourage you to take a look at the condition in our high quality photos. Good luck on your bid. -K.F.
