Our Assessment: The Carl Walther GmbH Model PP, introduced in 1929, stands as one of the most influential handgun designs of the early 20th century, pioneering the double-action/single-action trigger system paired with a slide-mounted decocking safety. Developed for police use in Weimar-era Germany, the Polizei-Pistole quickly gained widespread adoption across European law enforcement and military circles. Chambered in .32 ACP, also known as 7.65mm Browning, the pistol utilizes a cartridge introduced in 1899 that became a standard for compact service pistols due to its manageable recoil and reliable performance in blowback-operated designs.
This 1930 production example presents in solid overall condition, retaining a strong portion of its original blued finish with visible handling and operational wear consistent with age and service. The grip panels show typical wear along the smooth borders while maintaining defined checkering and intact Walther banners. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, and the pistol retains its original sight configuration, including period-applied painted sight enhancements. The action functions correctly with a clean single-action break, reflecting the quality of Walther’s early production. Altogether, this pistol represents an early and historically significant example of the Model PP, capturing the formative years of a design that would influence handgun development for decades.
