Our Assessment: This C. Sharps Arms 1874 Sharps Old Reliable is a modern interpretation of the classic Sharps single-shot rifle, built around the traditional Old Reliable design and chambered in .38-55. This example is fitted with a substantial 30-inch heavy octagon barrel, giving it the long, traditional profile associated with the original Sharps rifles. A simple blade front sight is dovetailed into the barrel, while the rear sight is a buckhorn with a folding ladder, providing both a traditional sight picture and additional elevation adjustment. The tang has also been drilled, tapped, and plugged for the installation of a tang-mounted sight.
The rifle is particularly attractive for its two-piece smooth high-grade fancy walnut furniture. The semi-pistol-grip stock has a curved lower tang, straight comb, and cheek piece, and is finished with a color case-hardened, checkered metal butt plate. Up front, the smooth Schnabel-tipped forend complements the stock and gives the rifle a refined sporting-rifle appearance. The combination of the heavy octagon barrel, traditional sighting arrangement, and high-grade walnut furniture gives this Old Reliable the substantial presence and classic lines that make the 1874 Sharps such an enduring design.
