The right side of the barrel is marked “BAR CALIBER .270 Win. ONLY / BROWNING S.A.”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number, which includes the “NP” date code, and the “1D7” Lightweight model designation code.

Barrel Length: 21″

Sights / Optics: The front sight has been removed, but the sight ramp is still present. The rear sight is an adjustable U-notch sight pinned to a base, screwed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Leupold VX-1 3-9×40 scope, with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light handling wear, and rates in Very Good to Fine condition overall. The scope is mounted to a one-piece Leupold base, and sits in 1″ rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered walnut stock set, with semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber Browning buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stocks show light wear, with a few scratches, dings, and compressions scattered throughout. The checkering is mostly well defined, with a few light scratches and dings in the checkering on the forend and on the right side of the wrist. The gloss finish on the stocks is intact, and the wood grain is attractive. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Good to Very Good condition.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: There is no magazine included with this rifle.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is considerable fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with light scratches and minor dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces, along with a small spot of thin finish on the bottom of the barrel. There is adhesive residue around the front of the barrel and on the front sight ramp from tape that was around the barrel. Otherwise, the bluing is largely intact. The markings are clear and legible. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Browning BAR Mark II Lightweight is a lighter-handling version of Browning’s long-running gas-operated sporting rifle, combining Belgian manufacture and Portuguese assembly with walnut furniture and a detachable magazine system. Chambered in .270 Winchester with a 21″ barrel, this 1998 example offers a classic hunting configuration well suited for deer, antelope, and other medium game. The mounted Leupold VX-1 3-9×40 scope adds a practical field optic, while the Lightweight configuration keeps the rifle comparatively easy to carry.

This rifle is in Good to Very Good condition overall, retaining about 95% of its original blue finish with scattered light scratches and dings, a small area of thinning on the underside of the barrel, and adhesive residue around the muzzle area and front sight ramp. The walnut stocks also rate in Good to Very Good condition with scattered handling marks, mostly well-defined checkering, attractive grain, and no chips or cracks. The front sight has been removed, and no magazine is included. The bore is semi-bright with sharp rifling and considerable fouling, rating 8.5/10, while the action and safety function correctly. The included Leupold VX-1 3-9×40 scope has clear glass and rates in Very Good to Fine condition.
