Our Assessment: The Browning Hi-Power pistol, also known as the P35, stands as a hallmark of firearms innovation and reliability since its introduction in 1935. Crafted through a collaboration between renowned firearms engineer John Browning and Dieudonné Saive at Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Belgium, the Hi-Power was a response to a French military requirement for a modern handgun with a high-capacity magazine. Notably, it was among the earliest pistols to feature a double-stack magazine, setting a new standard for ammunition capacity.
Its design boasts several pioneering elements, including a single-action trigger mechanism, a manual safety lever, and a magazine disconnect safety. Chambered initially in 9mm Parabellum, the Hi-Power’s magazine typically holds 13 rounds, providing users with a significant firepower advantage. This, coupled with its ergonomic grip and smooth shooting characteristics, contributed to its widespread adoption by military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The Browning Hi-Power quickly earned a reputation for reliability and versatility, becoming the standard-issue sidearm for numerous countries across the globe. Its use extended beyond military and police applications, as civilian shooters also favored it for self-defense, target shooting, and concealed carry. Over the decades, the Hi-Power’s sleek profile and smooth operation endeared it to generations of firearm enthusiasts, cementing its status as an iconic handgun. -R.E.
