Markings: The left side of the receiver is engraved with “Browning” in script with decorative scroll engraving surrounding it. The barrel is marked “*SPECIAL STEEL-12 GAUGE-SHELLS 2 3/4””. The right side of the barrel is marked with “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST LOUIS Mo. & MONTREAL P.Q. / MADE IN BELGIUM.” The underside of the receiver has the serial number “3M26405”.

Barrel Length: This shotgun comes with 2 barrels. One is 25.5” the other is 27.5” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Both have brass bead sights and ventilated ribs.

Choke: Fixed, Modified

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass bead fixed to a vented rib. The top of the rib and receiver is serrated to reduce glare while aiming.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is in a 2 piece wood configuration featuring a fluted straight comb, ventilated rubber buttpad, checkered prince of whales grip, and checkered forend. The LOP is 14” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are light scratches and compression marks present. The bottom of the forend has a large crack running from the receiver to the middle of the forend. The stock rates in Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: Both bores are bright. There is no erosion present. In this writers opinion both bore rate 10/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light scratches on the barrels and receiver, as well as some thinning on the edges. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The markings are crisp and legible. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Browning Auto-5 is a legendary semi-automatic shotgun, known for its robust long-recoil operation and timeless design. Manufactured in Belgium, this early example showcases beautiful factory engraving on the receiver, adding to its appeal as a collector’s item.

Designed by John Moses Browning, the Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun and remained in production for nearly a century. This particular example, produced in the early 1920s, retains much of its original charm, making it an excellent candidate for collectors or those who appreciate historical firearms.
