Stock Configuration & Condition: These refinished stocks are a two-piece press checkered walnut set with a rounded semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, Pachmayr ventilated rubber buttpad, and finger grooves running the length of the forend. The stocks have scratches, compression dents, and noticeable finish loss throughout. The checkering on the forend is sharp, while the checkering on the grip has smoother peaks.  There is an approximate 2 inch crack on the bottom rear of the forend. The LOP measures 13 3/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. Overall, the stocks are in Fair condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion. It is the opinion of this writer that the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal refinish. There is engraving loss at the wrist, and on the receiver. There are a few spots of small corrosion staining on the barrel and receiver. The screw heads are sharp, with little to no tooling. The markings are clear, with some refinish wear. Overall, this shotgun is in a Good-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, and the trigger has a clean and crisp break. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories:  None.

Our Assessment: The Browning Auto-5 Light Twelve is one of the most recognizable semi-automatic shotguns ever produced, designed by John Browning and introduced at the turn of the 20th century as the first successful long-recoil operated shotgun. Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale in Belgium, the A5 became a mainstay for hunters and sportsmen worldwide, prized for its reliability and distinctive humpback receiver profile that aids in sight alignment. By 1957, production was firmly within the classic Belgian era, with examples like this featuring Grade I engraving and finely machined components that reflect FN’s high manufacturing standards. Chambered for 2 3/4″ 12 gauge shells, the Light Twelve variant was engineered to reduce weight while maintaining the robust functionality of the original design, making it well suited for field use.

This example retains approximately 98% of its metal refinish, with some loss of engraving definition at the wrist and receiver, along with minor corrosion staining and light handling marks. The 27 1/2″ vent rib barrel has been opened from Full to Improved Modified, offering a versatile choke configuration, and is fitted with a simple bead front sight. The bore is bright and rates 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The refinished walnut stock set shows notable wear including scratches, compression dents, finish loss, and a visible crack at the rear of the forend, while the Pachmayr ventilated buttpad brings the length of pull to 13 3/4 inches. With replacement of the furniture, the condition rating could be higher. The action functions correctly with a clean trigger break, consistent with the long-recoil system’s proven design. This shotgun presents as a well-used but mechanically sound example of a classic Belgian Browning Auto-5.
