Bore Condition: The bore is very bright and the rifling is sharp. There is little to no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 9.5/10.
Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are light handling marks throughout along with some very faint rust spots forming. The action has light wear from use. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition as refinished. The 1898/05 bayonet is in Good condition with rust spots and patina throughout. The blade has several minor chips and edge rolling. The scabbard and frog are missing.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: 1898/05 type bayonet.
Our Assessment: The Bavarian K98AZ Mauser is a compact and historically significant bolt-action rifle that represents a key development in German military firearms during the early 20th century. Chambered in 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) and featuring a 23.5-inch barrel, the K98AZ was designed as a carbine variant of the Gewehr 98, intended for use by cavalry, artillery crews, and other specialized units requiring a shorter, more maneuverable firearm. The addition of Bavarian markings connects this rifle to the regional military forces of Bavaria, adding a layer of historical intrigue and collectibility. The K98AZ’s compact design and shorter barrel offered significant advantages in handling and portability over the full-length Gewehr 98, making it ideal for use in confined spaces or rugged terrain. Despite its smaller size, the rifle retained the legendary reliability and accuracy of the Mauser 98 action, ensuring excellent performance in the field. The 8mm Mauser cartridge provided formidable stopping power and range, making the K98AZ a highly effective weapon for both military engagements and later sporting use. Features like the bent bolt handle and shorter handguard distinguish it from its longer counterparts, highlighting its specialized design.
For collectors and enthusiasts, the Bavarian K98AZ Mauser is a fascinating artifact that reflects Germany’s evolving military needs during the early 20th century. The Bavarian markings further enhance its value, linking it to a specific region and military tradition within the German Empire. Whether appreciated for its practical design, its historical context as a precursor to the K98k, or its connection to Bavarian military forces, the K98AZ is a highly desirable piece for those interested in the history of Mauser rifles and their role in shaping military firearm design. It stands as a testament to the adaptability and enduring legacy of the Mauser platform. -R.E.
